Quebec: A Hidden Gem Unveiled at an Unforgettable Conference
As a journalist, I’ve had the opportunity to travel far and wide across Canada, but nothing could have prepared me for the rich, immersive experience I recently had at a Quebec-centric conference in Toronto’s Distillery District. Hosted by Tourism Quebec and 15 regional partners, this "roaming conference" felt less like a typical industry event and more like a vibrant cultural exploration. It truly showcased the best of what Quebec has to offer—and trust me when I say, it’s one of Canada's hidden gems that every bride-to-be should consider when planning a destination wedding or romantic honeymoon escape.
The day kicked off with an incredible editor panel, featuring five of Canada's leading travel and lifestyle editors, moderated by the ever-charming Maryam Siddiqi. The discussions were insightful, shedding light on trends in travel and how Quebec's unique blend of history, culture, and nature positions it as a top destination.
Then, the conference shifted gears with a keynote session that had everyone talking. Renowned chef Chuck Hughes brought his signature enthusiasm and humour, giving us an insider’s look into Quebec's culinary scene. His passion for local ingredients had me dreaming of cozy, intimate wedding menus filled with unexpected, regional flavours.
Speaking of local flavours, one of the most engaging parts of the day was a hands-on workshop with food columnist Allison Van Rassel. We were introduced to Québec’s wild and surprising flavours—from maple syrup-infused delights to wild game charcuterie. If you’re a bride looking to infuse a bit of Quebec into your wedding, you’ll love the idea of adding these distinctive elements to their celebration.
One of the most meaningful experiences came from an Indigenous workshop with Tourisme Autochtone Québec, led by Skanaie:'a Deer, a kanien'kéha teacher. We learned how to make traditional cornhusk dolls, a symbolic craft that speaks to the values of passing on traditions to future generations—something every bride can relate to as she begins her own family journey.
In one of the more whimsical workshops, we learned to "sing like a whale" with Christine Stadelmann from the Marine Mammal Interpretation Centre. Yes, you read that right—we earned certificates in whale singing! It was a fun reminder that Quebec has so much to offer beyond the expected—imagine the tales you'll have to tell after honeymooning in Quebec's rugged, maritime regions!
As the sun set, we were treated to an intimate performance by Josh Alexander, Québec City's own rising music star and winner of the 2023 Canada’s Walk of Fame Emerging Musician program. His soulful voice provided the perfect backdrop to a day filled with discovery and inspiration.
For those who were extra curious, the adventure didn’t end in Toronto. Media guests were also given the opportunity to embark on pre/post-conference press trips to explore Quebec firsthand, and it was there we learned first hand, that Quebec is in fact the ultimate destination.
Whether you’re dreaming of a wedding or honeymoon destination that offers rich culture, unforgettable experiences, and mouthwatering cuisine, or just looking for a romantic Canadian location you can escape to before the big day, look no further than Quebec. This province is not just a hidden gem—it’s a treasure waiting to be discovered.
