'I Do, Redo' with Robin and Troy

'I Do, Redo' with Robin and Troy

-

When the motivated, bold, and down-to-earth Robin and Troy met 16 years ago they could have never imagined that their home grown Canadian journey would take them here.

From falling in love on the beaches of Nova Scotia to canceling their wedding on the shores of the Caribbean, these two have certainly seen their fair share of sandy-side surprise adventures. While adventures are something these two adrenaline junkies have in common, nothing could prepare them for their greatest rush of all - having the chance to tie the knot on CTV and Jessica Mulroney’s latest prime time hit, ‘I Do, Redo’.

We sat down with the long-time-partners and now brand new newly-weds, to chat all things weddings, timing, and twists of fate.

CBG: ‘I Do, Redo’ is all about featuring couples whose original weddings didn’t quite go as planned - Tell us about your “original” wedding?

Robin: In March of 2017 we left for a destination wedding to the Caribbean. A total of 18 guests joined us for what we hoped would be a week of celebration and sun.

CBG: Aw, it sounds like it was going to be such a wonderful event! What happened?

Robin: 12 hours into the trip guests started to show symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea, which we originally assumed was gastro upset due to dietary changes. Three days into the trip a total of 8 people were hospitalized including Troy and myself. Another 5 people were sick at the resort. Troy and I were admitted to the hospital on what would have been our wedding day.

CBG: Oh no, that’s awful! We’re so sorry to hear it. So what happened to the wedding that was planned?

Robin: Attempts were made to reschedule the wedding for a date closer to the end of the week in hopes that people would be feeling better, however the remaining week was spent looking out our hospital window and counting down the days until we could return home. A diagnosis of salmonella poisoning was given.

CBG: Yikes! So no wedding then?

Robin: We returned to Nova Scotia without having gotten married.

CBG: How heartbreaking. What was going through your mind when you first discovered that people were starting to get sick and things were starting to go awry?

Robin & Troy: At first it was hard to comprehend the severity of the situation. Initially, we felt it was unfortunate that people were sick but they would be feeling better in a few days. It was not until multiple people were admitted to the hospital that we realized that this would make more of an impact on our week and wedding than we originally thought.

CBG: Wow. We can only imagine. Was there a moment after everything happened where you knew you kind of had to pull the plug on the original plans?

Robin & Troy: Early in the week we made plans to reschedule for the last day of our trip in hopes that both ourselves and our guests would be feeling better and able to participate in our wedding. During our time in hospital, we held onto hope that we could still salvage the plan and held off on cancelling the wedding until a few hours before the wedding was scheduled to take place. When we made the decision to cancel, we were both still admitted in the hospital. When we were discharged, we had just enough time to pack and catch our return flight to Nova Scotia.

CBG: Holy, what a journey. So after all of that, what made you want to step up and submit yourselves for this once in a lifetime opportunity?

Robin & Troy: The show found us! When we returned to Nova Scotia after our original wedding, the casting team for ‘I Do, Redo’ stumbled on a news article about our experience and reached out to us on our social media accounts. They explained that they had read our story and wanted to offer us a redo.

CBG: In what world! That’s incredible. Funny how that happens sometimes isn’t it? Life and opportunities just kind of find you. Kind of how you found each other! Troy, you’re a self described non-romantic, but we love that you still decided to propose to Robin. How did you know that she was the one, and, that despite the fact that you weren’t really the most romantic person, you still wanted to marry her?

Troy: I always knew that Robin was the one. I never really had a strong desire to be married, but over time I realized that Robin deserved it and I wanted to show her how important she was to me.

CBG: Aw, that’s so sweet. And Robin? How did you know that Troy was “The One”?

Robin: Starting early on in our relationship I noticed that when I would think about my future Troy was always a part of it. I could not imagine experiencing life without him beside me.

CBG: Well that’s just the sweetest thing ever. We’re so happy you two found each other and not only had this wonderful experience of love, but this phenomenal opportunity to celebrate it (again)! What were you most excited about when it came to having this second chance?

Robin & Troy: In the months leading up to the actual event the thought of having the passion and talents of Jessica Mulroney and Caspar Haydar planning the details of our wedding was extraordinary. We knew that whatever they decided, it would far exceed the cookie wedding that we would have had in the Caribbean.

CBG: Totally! It’s always so great when you get the chance to work with real experts that come with not just raw talent, but so much seasoned experience. It really allows you to experience something better than your wildest dreams. Troy, you got to take some time on the show to live out your dreams working with the choreographer to get in touch with your ‘romantic side’, how was it having to tap into that side of who you are?

IDRD Canadian Bride Guide 4

Troy: It turned out that finding that side of me was easier than I had expected. The choreographer made me feel comfortable and understood that this was outside of anything I had ever done. The support and patience showed to me by Caspar and the crew helped me to gain confidence and feel more at ease.

CBG: So great to hear. And how did it feel once you were finally able to pull it off with that big wedding dance for Robin?

Troy: I felt relieved and accomplished! I was surprised by Robin’s response and was happy it was over.

CBG: Ha, hilarious! And Robin, one of the things you worked on on the show was really learning to release your emotions and take back some control with that boxing experience with Jessica. Did you find some of those strategies helpful? Have you been able to apply some of them to your day to day life post-wedding?

Robin: Exercise has always been an outlet for me to release stress. On that day, Jessica introduced me to boxing. The experience was enjoyable and I can see myself continuing with boxing in the future.

CBG: That’s so wonderful in so many ways. Not only did you get to experience that, but you got to experience another pretty special moment when Jessica pulled out that same updated dress for you. To have the chance to see something that you had spent so much time looking forward to wearing reappear in your life to really help celebrate this monumental day must have been amazing. What was that like?

IDRD Canadian Bride Guide 6

Robin: Getting to wear the dress really felt like the experience had come full circle. I am fortunate to have had Jessica understand the importance of finding the dress and allowing me to have the experience I was denied during our first attempt.

CBG: How fortunate indeed! What we loved about your story, was that at the end of the day, all you two really seemed to actually want was a chance for your families to all celebrate together - for them to enjoy and for memories to be made. Do you feel that you can now say you’ve finally been able to give them that?

Robin & Troy: Absolutely, every time we get together the stories of our original wedding have been replaced with fun memories from our redo. We feel fortunate that everyone that attended our original wedding, as well as many other friends and family members, were able to celebrate with us during our redo. It was an important day in our history together.

IDRD Canadian Bride Guide 7

CBG: For sure! Now that you’ve accomplished your self-proclaimed “Mission” of getting married, how does it feel!?!

Robin & Troy: It feels great to have it completed because it was long overdue.

CBG: Totally. On that same train of thought, prior to being on the show, you had been together for 16 years, and you never actually got married - we guess hence why this one was so “overdue” - how has your relationship changed or not changed, since you actually had the chance to say your final “I do’s”?

Robin & Troy: Prior to the redo we had a lot of stress around how to try a second time. The redo has eliminated that stress and allowed us to concentrate on moving forward with our life. Many things remain the same, however we agree there is a feeling of unity that has developed since we became husband and wife.

CBG: How lovely. So there was definitely some evolution to the relationship as a result. While having the chance to finally become husband and wife must have been a dream, what did being featured on ‘I do redo’ mean to you as people?

IDRD Canadian Bride Guide 8

Robin & Troy: We appreciate the fact that others heard our story and felt like we deserved to have a second chance. The episode will forever be a reminder of such an amazing day and we will cherish it forever.

CBG: So beautiful. Finally, what takeaway do you hope that your episode gives others who might be watching at home?

Robin & Troy: We hope that people see that it is easy to get caught up in all the small details of your wedding, however what is more important is to remember that the day is your day. Take the time to enjoy it and each other.

CBG: Some very wise words from two very deserving people. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us Robin & Troy - We wish you a lifetime of happiness!
