We sat down with Smile Stylist Dr. Kaloti to chat cosmetic dentistry and to learn the art of how to achieve the perfect wedding day smile makeover.
CBG: Dr. Kaloti, so many thanks for taking the time to chat with us today! As an incredibly well known smile specialist, you’re carving such a unique niche for yourself within the dental industry. Could you tell us a bit more about who you are and what you do?
Dr. K: I am the owner and Official Dentist of the Smile Stylist – a cosmetic dental practice. I work with my patients and get to know who they are to provide them their desired and dream smile. I am fortunate to be the official dentist of Rogers Cup and Tennis Canada.
CBG: That’s phenomenal! So you’ve got the brilliant technical skills, the incredibly honed eye of a cosmetic specialist, and the trust of some of this nations top athletes and athletic organizations. That’s incredible. Clearly those factors alone are enough to distinguish you from the rest, but what would you say really differentiates a ‘Smile Stylist’ from a traditional dentist?
Dr. K: I would like to think the name says it all. A traditional dentist would see a patient’s teeth and provide them a list of what needs fixing. However, at the Smile Stylist we work with the patient through their ideal smile lens. We discover through them what they want to fix or improve within their smile, and work with them using the latest 3D smile design technology to gain the same desired outcome; a better, more confident smile.
CBG: We love how you take such a personalized and creative approach to all that you do. Being a ‘Smile Stylist’ is such an incredible niche - what got you into it?
Dr. K: Smile Styling focuses on representing individuality and uniqueness. My passion for dentistry strived from my love for art. Artistry celebrates distinctiveness and exemplifies one’s artistic features. I believe dentistry encompasses all these factors, and through styling smiles, I can work with the patient’s facial features and come up with the perfect, unique smile that represents who they are and what they wanted exactly.
CBG: Truly customized, bespoke smiles. How refreshing. Why do you think having a great unique smile can be so transformative for people?
Dr. Kaloti: I truly believe that after the eyes, it is the smile that is most noticed feature for all people. Smiling is the universal language for conveying confidence, happiness and even openness. No matter where you travel around the world, a smile is considered a greeting that everyone understands and can respond to. A smile represents joy and friendliness, and people are regularly attracted to those with this type of attitude and outlook. Often, I come across patients who have all these aspects within them but are not comfortable with their smile and unable to show this side of them. With the right smile and the proper corrections to one’s teeth and oral health, they can begin to shine and show who they truly are – which is transformative in and within itself.
CBG: So it sounds like there’s a huge psychological component to it as well. You really are helping to transform people from the smile in. Now when it comes to transformations for a specific event, like your big day for example, what are some absolute “musts” you always recommend to clients?
Dr. K: When preparing for your wedding day, I would say an absolute must is having a clean, bright smile. If anything – I would recommend a dental cleaning, to remove build up and to polish the teeth. Once done, I would recommend dental teeth whitening to enhance a person’s natural smile and to remove discolouration as much as possible. Although you may think these recommendations are simple, they work wonders as steps to prepare patients to be confident for their big day.
CBG: What great, tangible advice, sure to make that subtle pop! What about those brides and grooms who are looking for a total smile makeover? What might that process look like and how do you decide what steps are best for each of your clients?
Dr. K: We first invite the patient in for a complimentary consultation. Here, we get to know who they are as a person. We get to see their interests, personality, and we begin to sense what exactly they are looking for. We always treat all our patients as guests so consults are a great opportunity to discuss with the patient what they aspire their smile to look like and to see if we’re a good fit for them.
Next step usually involves inviting the patient back in for a Smile Design. In the Smile Design, we do a thorough examination of the patient’s oral health. We take a full series of X-Rays to diagnose any outstanding issues and take professional series of photos of the patient in a variety of angles and smiles. Once completed, we begin by designing multiple treatment options to match the patient’s desired outcome. We also work on a Smile Simulation, in which we use a software to create a before and after transformation, to give the patient a visualization of what they will look like.
Finally, we invite the patient to a custom individualized powerpoint presentation, where we present the treatment options, costs and treatment timelines. Once the patient selects their treatment option, then the fun begins!
CBG: WOW! We love how bespoke and thorough the whole process is! It really is such a customized and holistic take on the smile designing process. With so much attention, care, and skill put into absolutely all that you do, you must have some absolutely spectacular results! Any most memorable smile makeovers? If so, what made them so memorable?
Dr. K: It is difficult to choose the most memorable smile makeovers, since each one is special for a variety of different reasons. However, recently I was fortunate to work on a beautiful couple; Callie and Trevor towards getting ready for their big wedding day. It was such an exciting journey working with a couple who were not only preparing for their wedding day together and everything that is encompassed within that, however also going through their smile transformation journey with one another. Seeing their love and excitement for one another and being brought together in their smile journey was such an unimaginable feeling for me. Other memorable transformations include a mother/daughter duo and also identical twins that were anything but identical!
CBG: How fantastic! Each of those sound so uniquely different, complex, meaningful, and heartwarming! What would be your top piece of advice for anyone looking to plan a ‘smile boost’ for their big day?
Dr. K: My top piece of advice for anyone looking to boost their smile for their wedding day is just to smile! I have never seen an ugly smile! Don't ever rob the world from seeing you express your true happiness and spirit especially on your wedding day! If however, you decide you need professional help to boost your smile, then start early! Go to your dentist with a list of your questions, concerns and desires on what you want to prepare for your big day. If you allocate enough time to work towards the smile you deserve, you for sure will receive it.
CBG: What beautiful, meaningful, and true advice. With that piece of brilliant wisdom imparted, if you were not a ‘Smile Stylist’ what would you be?
Dr. K: If I were not in dentistry, I would most certainly then be an artist, and have probably been a cartoonist. It was originally my love for art and design that had drawn me to dentistry. Therefore, if not in dentistry, I would have taken this same passion for artistry into cartoon and animation and hopefully been able to make people smile through watching my work in action.
CBG: Spoken like a true artist. One who is as passionate as he is talented. Having so many different facets to what you do must be so rewarding. Is there one part that you’d consider to be your favourite out of all that you do?
Dr. K: My favourite part of what I do is knowing that I have helped provide patients with a lifelong self esteem boost. I may be helping patients in their smile journey to prepare for their big wedding day, however their transformations last a lifetime, and they gain the confidence and self contentment to go with it.
CBG: We couldn’t agree more! A million thanks for taking the time to chat with us Dr. Kaloti. You have definitely given us all something to smile about and we cannot wait to see what other amazing smiles you style next!
